Non-Executive Officers’ specialisations were identified by different coloured distinction cloth worn between the gold rank lace on their sleeves or undress epaulettes. Electrical Engineers chose green and from this term "Greenie" originates and remains in use to this day to describe any personnel in the electrical department.
